Bite Back at Cancer is an organisation raising money for the two charities that are close to the heart for many of us divers.  Sadly, many of us will have lost close friends or family to cancer, including our dive buddies, instructors or perhaps our dive club drinking pal.

Marie Curie is one of our chosen charities, as their support is invaluable during the hard times that cancer can bring.

The second charity, Bite-Back, is an organisation dedicated to marine conservation and the protection of sharks and aims to reduce consumer demand upon threatened shark and fish species.

The 2009 Ball

The 2009 Black Tie Ball was held at The Richmond Hill Hotel on Friday the 25th of September was and such a great success!

Just under a hundred ladies and gents ironed their posh frocks and dinner suits, and made their way to Richmond to attend the Bite Back at Cancer Charity Ball.

2009 was the third year the charity ball has been held, its aim to raise awareness and much needed funds for Marie Curie Cancer Care and Bite Back Marine and Shark Conservation.

Despite being slightly down on numbers, the event managed to improve on 2008’s fund raising by a staggering 50%, with a total raised just over £6,000. This money will be split evenly between the two causes.

A lovely three course dinner was followed by a few speeches, a charity auction with some amazing lots and energetic bidding, a live band and a fun casino Roulette table.

The photo competition, judged by Gillian MacDonald and Jane Morgan, was won by Kathy White with her atmospheric shot, titled “Light beams at St Johns”, bagging her a luxury liveaboard trip to Komodo, courtesy of Worldwide Dive and Sail.

Graham Buckingham of Bite-Back also managed to draw Kathy’s name out of the hat to win her the main prize of the O’Three dry suit, however she generously returned the prize to be entered into the auction.
